Luka Doncic Ties NBA Scoring Mark Last Recorded By Wilt Chamberlain 60 Years Ago

Luka Doncic’s chapter in the basketball record book continues to grow. On Wednesday night, as the Dallas Mavericks knocked off the Utah Jazz 103-100, the Slovenian superstar added another astonishing statistic to his already overflowing pages.

Doncic finished the game with 33 points. He has now scored 30-plus points in each of his first seven games to start the season. Only two other players in NBA history—Jack Twyman and Wilt Chamberlain—have done so, with Chamberlain last doing it in the 1962-63 season.

“I always hear Wilt Chamberlain. He is always there. It is crazy,” Doncic said. “Obviously, I just want to play in the NBA. This is really a dream for me, and I couldn’t be happier to just play basketball and do my job. I am just happy to play basketball and when we win games it is even better.”

Although matching a feat from “Wilt the Stilt” that has stood for 60 years is more than impressive on its own, Doncic notched other records as well Wednesday night. He passed Michael Jordan to move into fourteenth on the NBA’s all-time list with games of 30-plus points and 10-plus assists. Doncic had 11 against the Jazz. He’s now tied with Kevin Johnson and Damian Lillard with 39 such games.

He moved up the ranks in the Mavericks’ history books as well. The 23-year-old passed Mark Aguirre for tenth place on Dallas’ all-time assists list after recording assist No. 2,165 against the Jazz.

This season, Doncic is averaging 36.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, 9.0 assists and 1.7 steals. He currently leads the league in scoring average and has a full 2.5-point advantage over Giannis Antetokounmpo, who sits in second.

While Doncic shies away from record-breaking accolades, his teammates know just how special he is. They get to see him play every day.

“Luka is a savant; you know what I mean? In every sense of the word, as it applies to basketball,” Spencer Dinwiddie said. “Nothing shocks me. Obviously, he’s young—the best is yet to come. I think he’s going to set a lot of different records for the Mavs and be in the conversation with the greats and be one of the best in the league for as long as he chooses to play this game. So, it’s an honor to be able to play with a guy that talented.”
