Logan Paul Becomes Most Meaningful Celebrity Champion

Logan Paul won his first championship in WWE, defeating Rey Mysterio for the United States Championship with a pair of brass knuckles.

Paul was treated as a big star as WWE cut to a cinematic vignette of Paul driving a dune car in a Saudi Arabian desert. Paul drove the Dune car into Mohamed Abdo Theater.

Paul then dazzled with an array of impressive moves, including a fallaway moonsault. Still new to pro wrestling despite his unlimited potential, Paul wasn’t perfect. But per usual, his spectacular moments overshadowed his few missteps.

Logan Paul’s return to WWE was one in search of gold. Paul made his intentions clear that he looked to dethrone Rey Mysterio as United States champion after Paul’s contentious victory over bitter rival Dillon Danis last month.

“This is a hobby for me,” Paul said about his boxing career. “My true passion, I’m a WWE superstar. … I’m an American boy, and I want that U.S. title. Rey Mysterio, I already beat you once and I’m coming for that U.S. championship.”

Mysterio promptly accepted Paul’s challenge as the impressive celebrity wrestler looked to add to his legacy with his first-ever United States Championship. Though Celebrities have won championships in WWE before (look no further than David Arquette, Pacman Jones and several WWE 24/7 champions), Paul’s United States Title win somehow feels like the most vindicating celebrity title win of all time.

Logan Paul has taken his role as a WWE Superstar very seriously. Unlike past celebrity title wins, Paul’s win was not a cheap publicity stunt. Far from it. Despite the amount of publicity WWE receives from Logan Paul, Logan earned this one. Logan Paul worked his way up the ladder. He earned the respect of wrestling fans and the locker room, not only as a a legitimate athlete, but easily the greatest celebrity wrestler of all time.

Paul has taken several insane bumps to prove his dedication to pro wrestling. Paul’s entire feud with Ricochet came off as Paul trying to prove just how many risks he’s willing to take as a wrestler. Now, two years into his WWE career, Paul won his first singles title. This is the same trajectory as most top stars in WWE. Mind you, Brock Lesnar won his first world championship at SummerSlam 2002, just five months into his career. Paul, slowly ascended from celebrity wrestler to champion in WWE, and it feels more real than any celebrity championship win.
