‘JugJugg Jeeyo’ Earns $4.7 Million In Three Days

The latest Hindi film, JugJugg Jeeyo has earned $4.7 million over the first weekend in India. The movie features Neetu Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Kiara Advani. It also marks Neetu Kapoor’s return to films after a long gap of nine years. The film collected $0.75 million in US markets alone.

The film had a decent opening and made $1.1 million on Friday when it released. The collections saw a steep rise on Saturday and the film bagged $1.59 million on the second day. Directed by Raj Mehta, the film released across 3500 screens in India alone, and saw further rise in collections on Sunday. It collected $1.9 million in India alone.

JugJugg Jeeyo traces the story of a family in which the parents, and the son decide to go for a divorce. How a modern, but typical Indian family deals with the news and what changes it brings, is what the film explores.

Much like Mehta’s first film, Good Newwz, JugJugg Jeeyo is quite loud in the treatment. The family in focus has all the elements of a typical Bollywood Punjabi family with the over-the-top father, grand houses and lavish weddings spread all over.

With Anil Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor, the film explores the equation of an old married couple with the wife busy delivering duties as the parent while the husband is enjoying his life. The dynamics between the younger couple expose the audience to modern day struggles of Indian families – dealing with financial independence of a woman, demands of emotional connect and such.

JugJugg Jeeyo has its set of problems, which include some stereotypes being propagated, but it succeeds in maintaining a balance – only the other side seems a bit of tokenism. Nonetheless, the film is a full package of what sells as family entertainment in Hindi films. It manages to make the audience laugh, clap and cry as the characters take turns in the story.

Srijit Mukerji’s Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga, headlined by Pankaj Tripathi, also released on June 24. With limited screens, the film did not have much scope to perform at the ticket windows. It earned $0.1 million on the first day and made a total of $0.76 million over the first weekend in India.

Sherdil The Pilibhit Saga is a comment on man-nature divide and takes a critical look at the way Indian administrative system works with respect to the public. Tripathi essays the role of the village head who opts to sacrifice himself in front of a lion so that the villagers may benefit from a government’s scheme.
