Johnny Depp Appeals $2 Million Verdict In Amber Heard’s Countersuit—Just After Her Appeal

Topline

Johnny Depp filed Friday to appeal the $2 million judgment in his ex-wife Amber Heard’s countersuit against him, according to papers obtained by Forbes, days after she filed to appeal the $10.4 million judgment in his defamation suit against her.

Key Facts

Depp’s team had no comment regarding the filing.

Forbes has reached out to representatives for Heard for comment.

Key Background

Depp sued Heard for $50 million for defamation over a 2018 op-ed she wrote about experiencing domestic abuse. She did not name Depp in the piece, but the actor claimed the insinuation cost him his acting career. Heard later countersued Depp for $100 million, over comments his lawyer made referring to her allegations of abuse as a hoax. The jury ultimately decided Heard defamed Depp on all counts, and awarded him a $10.4 million judgment. Heard won part of her countersuit, and was awarded $2 million. This week, her lawyers filed to appeal the judgment, saying they “believe the court made errors that prevented a just and fair verdict consistent with the First Amendment.” At the time, representatives for Depp said they “remain confident in our case and that this verdict will stand.”
