Jared Leto Contributes To Morbius Meme, Effectively Ending The Morbius Meme

If you were wondering when the Morbius meme cycle would run its course, that time may be at hand. Jared Leto has now posted a short video of himself pretending to read a script for Morbius 2: It’s Morbin’ Time, which has racked up millions of views since it went up:

Here we learn that the Morbius meme is really just centered on Doctor Michael Morbius and the ridiculousness of the character and movie. And now Jared Leto getting in on the joke just feels…weird to many, and it’s brought up a fresh course of Morbius memers making it clear they do not actually like Jared Leto, the person.

Frequently brought up as the video has been shared around social media are the allegations that Jared Leto has sexually harassed a number of young women over the years, including allegations that some of the women he is accused of being inappropriate toward were underage. Some of this is even from his fellow actors:

That caused Suicide Squad (the second one) director James Gunn to reply at the time “he started at 18?”

Leto has denied many of these allegations along with stranger ones like when he was accused of sending used condoms to Suicide Squad co-stars.

“99.9 per cent of what people read is bullshit,” Leto said at the time to EW.

The other meme in this case regarding Leto himself is that the actor stains all the superhero projects he touches, whether it’s his mostly-disliked portrayal of The Joker in the first Suicide Squad movie, or Morbius, which despite the memes, is one of the worst reviewed superhero movies of this entire generation.

As for the future of Morbius, that’s unclear. The memeing has caused the movie to return to 1,000 screens, but the film was not a box office hit in its original run, and it seems like Sony is testing whether the jokes will actually lead to people going back to theaters to see the movie, now that it’s a running gag. That remains to be seen, as do potential plans for a real Morbius 2 as Sony continues work on its Spider-man-adjacent series of films that probably would indeed necessitate the return of Morbius in some sort of Sinister Six crossover later. I bet that was in Leto’s contract, given that it’s clearly Sony’s long term plan. But if all these movies fail, and none of them perform like Venom, that’s just not going to happen.

We’ll see if the memeing can survive Leto’s own joke, and whether it will in fact, continue to be Morbin’ time going forward.
