Indianapolis Colts Sign Nick Foles To Two-Year Deal

Another reunion is going down in Indianapolis as the Colts signed quarterback Nick Foles to a two-year contract on Monday. Immediately, Foles steps into the Colts’ QB room as an established backup presence if Matt Ryan ever went down due to injury.

Ryan is one of the most durable quarterbacks in NFL history, but for a win-now team like Indianapolis, they need to keep their options to prevent worst-case scenarios. Foles is the ideal remedy, especially with the magic he’s created in the past with Colts head coach Frank Reich.

Before Reich became a head coach, he and Foles helped lead the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense to a Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots. Foles has credited Reich multiple times for helping revive his career, and now he joins Reich in Indianapolis as one of the best veteran backups in the NFL.

Three years in a row now has a Reich-led connection at quarterback eventually joined the Colts. First, it was Philip Rivers via free agency in 2020. After Rivers retired, Indianapolis gambled on Carson Wentz and it failed spectacularly. Now, Foles comes in with no expectations but provides a lot of comfort behind Ryan as their QB2.

Looking around the league, Indianapolis’ duo of Ryan and Foles is one of the better starter-backup tandems. With how aggressive the Colts have been to plug all of their holes this offseason, their championship window is over the final two years of Ryan’s contract through 2023-24. Foles will now be along for the entire ride establishing the Colts’ best backup signal-caller since Matt Hassellbeck with Andrew Luck.

Entering into training camp, the top two spots on the quarterback depth chart are secured with Ryan and Foles. What happens for QB3, more likely than not a practice squad spot? Former fourth-round pick James Morgan was waived to make room for Foles. Now, it’s a camp battle upcoming between 2020 sixth-round pick Sam Ehlinger (Texas) and undrafted free agent Jack Coan (Notre Dame).

Having an insurance policy on standby is always a wise business decision. The Colts securing Foles for the next two seasons is exactly that as they make an all-in Super Bowl push.
