India Box Office| ‘Goodbye’ Scores Low, ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’ Continues Successful Run

While the new Hindi film Goodbye has had a damp start at the Indian box office, Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: I that released on September 30, continues to rule the ticket windows across the globe. In the US markets alone, Ponniyin Selvan: I has earned $0.9 million over the second weekend. It also ranked ninth on the ComscoreSCOR
list for the weekend ending October 9. The Hindi-version of the film has collected $2.1 million in Indian markets in ten days.

Meanwhile, Amitabh Bachchan-Neena Gupta-starrer Goodbye managed a meagre $0.6 million gross collections worldwide. Most trade experts had expected the film to make roughly a little above $1 million. Directed by Vikas Bahl (of Queen fame), the film also stars Rashmika Mandanna, Sunil Grover and Elli AvrRam. Producers of the film have announced that the film tickets will be available for $0.97 on October 11, to mark Bachchan’s 80th birthday on Tuesday.

Ponniyin Selvan: I had grossed nearly $40 million worldwide in one week. Starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Vikram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Karthi in the lead roles, Ponniyin Selvan I earned $8.705 million worldwide in its first weekend, and had made it to the seventh slot on ComscoreSCOR
highest global earnings over the weekend ending October 2.

Ponniyin Selvan I is about an Indian prince from the kingdom of Cholas. The film is based on Tamil author Kalki Krishnamurthy’s series of five books, Ponniyin Selvan. The historic drama paints an enchanting picture of the yesteryear Indian kingdom and holds the women characters with equal respect and dignity as the men characters. The second installment of Ponniyin Selvan will hit theatres in 2023. Ponniyin Selvan I released across the globe on September 30 in five languages – Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

The Hindi remake of Vikram Vedha, has also had a dismal show at the box office. The film starring Hrithik Roshan, Radhika Apte and Saif Ali Khan also hit theatres on the same day as Ponniyin Selvan: I did. It grossed roughly $12.1 million in ten days.
