If You Loved ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ Here Are 3 Legal Dramas To Binge

NetflixNFLX
hit gold with its series, The Lincoln Lawyer. The legal drama’s perfect mix of mystery and comedy makes it one of the streamer’s best new series of the year.

In a world that often feels unjust, it’s fun to escape into a show where wrongs are made right. Everyone gets theirs via criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), a Los Angeles-based attorney who runs his practice out of the back seat of his Lincoln.

The series is based on Michael Connelly’s bestselling “The Lincoln Lawyer” novel series, with the first season centered on the second book, “The Brass Verdict.” Connelly is the bestselling author behind 36 novels and is very hands-on with the show serving as executive producer and writer. Created for TV by David E. Kelley and Ted Humphrey, the cast includes Neve Campbell, Becki Newton, Jazz Raycole and Angus Sampson.

It premiered on May 13, and instantly, the 10-episode thriller became a hit. Within two weeks, it topped the English TV list with more than 108 million hours watched, making it the most-viewed title during its second week on the platform. In addition, it made the Top 10 in 90 countries.

Viewers love legal dramas, and while The Lincoln Lawyer is based on fiction, here are three true-crime series to binge-watch as we wait for Mickey and his crew to return for a second season.

The Staircase (HBO Max/8 Episodes) – What exactly happened on December 9, 2001, in the Durham, North Carolina home of crime novelist Michael Peterson and his wife Kathleen remains a mystery. She was found dead at the bottom of a staircase in their mansion. To this day, questions about how she got there remain.

Kathleen’s death is the basis for two mesmerizing series. First, there is the 13-episode documentary series streaming on Netflix by Matthieu Belghiti and Academy-award winner Jean-Xavier de Lestrade that details the 16-year judicial battle that divided the Peterson family. This new scripted version starring Toni Collette as Kathleen alongside Colin Firth as Michael offers three plausible truths. Also starring are Michael Stuhlbarg, Juliette Binoche, Dane DeHaan, Olivia DeJonge, Rosemarie DeWitt, Tim Guinee, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sophie Turner, Vincent Vermignon, Odessa Young and Parker Posey.

The Girl From Plainville (Hulu/8 Episodes) – In 2017, Michelle Carter (Elle Fanning) was convicted of involuntary manslaughter by a Massachusetts juvenile court judge for text messages she sent her then-boyfriend, Conrad Roy III, urging him to kill himself. Before he died in 2014, he reached out to her, saying he was afraid. She urged him to go through with it. She received a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence and served 15 months.

The texting-suicide case set a new precedent and made headlines around the world. Based on the Esquire article of the same name by Jesse Barron, the series renewed interest in the case. Chloë Sevigny, Colton Ryan, Cara Buono, Kai Lennox and Norbert Leo Butz star alongside Fanning.

Candy (Hulu/5 Episodes)Jessica Biel and Melanie Lynskey are so good in their roles as Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore in this take on the story of two suburban Texas mothers who were caught up in a deadly love triangle that culminated on Friday, June 13, 1980.

It was yet another busy day for Candy; she had many things to do and errands to run. She stopped by Betty’s home for what was supposed to be a quick visit to pick up a swimsuit for Betty’s daughter, who was spending the day with her and her children. The visit took a dark and bloody turn when, as Candy claims, Betty confronted her about an affair she had with her husband, Allan. The two women got into a violent struggle involving an ax, and the main question was who yielded the weapon first. We only know Candy’s side of the story. Neighbors discovered Betty’s chopped-up body that night in a blood-soaked utility room.

Also starring are Pablo Schreiber, Timothy Simons and Raúl Esparza. In addition to Hulu’s Candy, HBO Max is also premiering its version of the story later this year with a limited series entitled Love and Death, starring Elizabeth Olsen, Lily Rabe and Jesse Plemons.
