How To Download Music On Spotify

Topline

Premium Spotify users can download songs, albums, playlists and podcasts on phones, tablets, laptops, smart speakers and other wearable devices—here’s how.

Key Facts

Spotify says its app is accessible on over 2,000 devices.

It is suggested to have at least 1 GB of free storage when trying to download Spotify.

There is a 10,000-song limit on Spotify downloads across five different devices.

Spotify Mobile And Desktop App

The Spotify mobile and desktop apps are available for free in the App Store on iPhone and Google Play Store on Android and Mac devices. The ability to download individual songs, albums, playlists and podcasts from the app is reserved for premium users who pay $9.99 per month for Spotify. To download any of these onto your devices, click the downward arrow that is circled.

Spotify On Smart Speakers

Some of the devices compatible with Spotify are the Amazon Echo Dot, Bose Home Speaker, Nest Audio and smart TVs. People can listen on these devices using Spotify Connect. Through either the mobile or desktop app, on either a song or podcast episode, select the speaker icon to connect to the smart speaker. The app will recognize your device if it is at least iOS14, Android OS 5.0, OS X 10.13, Windows 10 or anything above these, if your phone or laptop and speaker are on the same WiFi network or if you use Bluetooth. Spotify Premium isn’t needed when trying to listen to music from the app on smart speakers.

Spotify On Wearable Devices

Along with smart speakers, Spotify is available for use on wearable devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy Watch and the Apple Watch.

Spotify Premium is needed to download playlists and podcasts, and individual songs cannot be downloaded. To download playlists and podcasts, on your respective mobile or desktop app, click the three dots right next to the download arrow, and select the device you’d like to download it on. Whether Spotify Premium is needed for traditional listening varies per the wearable. It is needed, though, for almost all downloads.
