Here’s What We Know About The 3 Explosions That Rocked Washington D.C. Businesses

Topline

Police are on the hunt for suspects after a series of explosive devices were thrown outside several businesses in Washington D.C., including one where a Molotov cocktail-style object was thrown, with authorities now—offering a $20,000 reward for information on the incidents that lead to an arrest and conviction, though relatively little remains publicly known about the attacks more than a day after they took place.

Key Facts

D.C. police released images of a potential suspect and their vehicle, showing a person wearing a white hooded sweatshirt along with black pants and black shoes, as well as an image of a gold/champagne colored Acura TL sedan with Maryland license plates.

The license plate read 17971CK, according to police.

The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a $10,000 reward for “information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in the destruction of property with explosives,” and the Washington Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is offering an additional $10,000 reward.

What We Don’t Know

Authorities have not named a potential motive.

Key Background

Early Sunday morning, during an approximately 15-minute period, the area of northeast Washington, D.C., experienced three separate incidents of explosive devices being detonated and a Molotov cocktail-style object being thrown. During the first incident, which happened around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, the photographed suspect detonated a device on the sidewalk outside of a Truist Bank ATM and then drove away, police said. At 4:36 a.m. the suspect detonated an explosive on the sidewalk outside a Nike store, officials said. Less than ten minutes later, at 4:45 a.m., the suspect threw a Molotov cocktail-style object at a Safeway grocery store and then drove away, police said. Police said they don’t believe members of the public were the target of the attacks, but that the suspect was targeting commercial establishments. None of the businesses were open at the time of the incidents and no one was injured, but there was damage at each of the three locations.

Crucial Quote

A man who lives in an apartment above the Truist ATM told NBC4, the Washington D.C. affiliate, the explosion woke him up. “It shook my living room,” he said. “It knocked all of my security cameras off the wall. It knocked my pictures off the wall. It pretty much rattled me.”

Surprising Fact

One of the locations, the Nike store, is just over a mile from the Capitol building.
