Georgetown Expected To Hire Providence Coach Ed Cooley

Georgetown is expected to name Providence coach Ed Cooley as its new men’s basketball coach to replace Patrick Ewing, according to multiple people with knowledge of the situation.

The news has also been reported by several outlets, including ESPN.com.

“Sometimes in life change is needed for emotional stability, for wellness and just because you’re at a place doesn’t mean everything’s forever,” Cooley told Morey Hershgordon of WPRI 12 in a television interview Sunday night.

“Providence has always been my dream job and I’ll continue to say that. Sometimes circumstance changes and it has nothing to do with administrators, it has nothing to do with athletic directors, it has all to do with where me and wife feel is something that we may possibly need.”

Cooley, a 53-year-old Providence native, becomes the first coach in Big East history to move from one league program to another. On Monday, it was reported on social media that Cooley and his wife Nurys had put their home in East Greenwich, RI up for sale.

He went 242-153 in 12 seasons at Providence with seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including this year.

A year ago, Cooley led the Friars to the Big East regular-season championship and the Sweet 16.

Cooley will replace Georgetown legend Patrick Ewing, who was fired earlier this month. Ewing went 75-109 in six seasons with one NCAA Tournament appearance. The Hoyas won a combined two Big East games the last two seasons. They went 0-19 a year ago in league play, 6-25 overall, and then finished 7-25 this past season, 2-18 in the Big East.
