Gaming Giant Ubisoft Will Support the Cronos Network as a Node Validator

Key highlights

  • Ubisoft will become a node validator in the Cronos Ecosystem to assist decentralized governance
  • Ubisoft’s involvement in the Cronos Ecosystem will establish the trust and adoption of large companies to Cronos

Ubisoft, the gaming titan behind the likes of ‘Assassin’s Creed’ and ‘Just Dance’, is no stranger to uncharted territories. This time, however, the adventure is not set in a historical era or a dance floor, but in the realm of blockchain technology. As part of the collaboration, Ubisoft will join the Cronos ecosystem as a node validator, contributing to the decentralized governance and evolution of the Cronos blockchain. This network is interoperable with both Ethereum and Cosmos, two of the most prominent blockchain platforms.

Now, Ubisoft is joining the team of 23 other Cronos blockchain validators. This team includes heavyweights like Crypto.com and infrastructure firm Blockdaemon. The more players on the team, the more decentralized the network becomes. Validators are responsible for validating transactions and producing new blocks on the blockchain every 5-6 seconds on average.

The Alliance: Ubisoft and Cronos Labs

The addition of such a major player as Ubisoft shows the increasing credibility and adoption of Cronos among mainstream companies. Ubisoft is renowned worldwide for creating hugely popular gaming franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six. As a pioneering force in the gaming industry, Ubisoft has continually embraced emerging technologies to push the boundaries of interactive entertainment.

Cronos Head of Labs Ken Timsit noted, “Ubisoft has an unparalleled understanding of blockchain’s potential to enable deeper engagement between game creators and gamers. Their decision to participate as a Cronos validator reflects their commitment to actively explore blockchain and shape its evolution.”

A key motivation behind Ubisoft’s involvement as a Cronos validator is to collaborate on potential blockchain use cases for the gaming industry. As Timsit mentioned, Ubisoft brings an invaluable perspective on how blockchain could transform gaming by enabling new forms of digital ownership, economies, and community engagement.

Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovation Lab will provide important feedback to guide Cronos’ roadmap and tooling for gaming-specific needs. For example, Cronos recently launched “Cronos Play”, a suite of developer tools to simplify building blockchain games. With Ubisoft’s input, platforms like Cronos Play could be tailored to match the needs of major game studios.

Ubisoft’s blockchain journey

Ubisoft’s support of Cronos is not a sudden leap into the unknown but rather the latest step in a journey that began in 2018. Ubisoft has been exploring the NFT gaming space for years, launching its own blockchain games, supporting various networks and platforms, and even investing in projects.

The company is currently developing ‘Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles’, a tactical role-playing game announced on the Oasys blockchain network. This follows Ubisoft’s launch of in-game NFT items on the Tezos blockchain for its ‘Ghost Recon: Breakpoint’ PC game in late 2021, a move that stirred up a hornet’s nest of backlash from traditional gaming fans.

Ubisoft’s blockchain portfolio is as diverse as its gaming franchises. The company has also put its Rabbids characters into the Ethereum metaverse game ‘The Sandbox’.

The news did not have a major impact on the Cronos (CRO) price. CRO price is down -0.8% and changing hands at $0.06 at the time of writing this article.
