Jeremy Giambi, a former MLB player and brother of MVP Jason Giambi who was featured in the movie Moneyball, died Wednesday at the age of 47, his agent told multiple reporters

Key Facts

Agent Joel Wolfe told ESPN and the Athletic that Giambi died at his parents’ home in Southern California on Wednesday, but did not offer a cause of death.

Key Background

Born in San Jose and raised in West Covina, California, Giambi played college ball at Cal State Fullerton, where he helped the Titans win the 1995 College World Series. He played outfield and first base in the MLB for six seasons, representing the Kansas City Royals, Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox. Giambi was a member of the 2002 Athletics squad that would become the subject of the 2003 bestselling book Moneyball, which documented the team’s analytics-driven charge to success, and he was later portrayed by actor Chris Pratt in the film adaptation of Moneyball, which was nominated for six Academy Awards. Giambi and his brother Jason Giambi, a five-time All-Star and 2000 American League MVP, played together for a stint in Oakland.

Surprising Fact

Giambi was featured as one of the key contributors to the Athletics’ historic 20-game win streak in Moneyball, but in actuality, he was traded from the team to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for John Mabry three months before the streak began.
