‘Forecasting Love And Weather’ Shows How Unpredictable Forecasts Can Be

Weather has patterns, which makes it somewhat predictable, but a wrong prediction can have disastrous results. Jin Ha-kyung, who works at Korea’s Meteorological Administration strictly follows the guidelines for predicting a weather event, but that doesn’t mean she’s always right. Her careful calculations don’t guarantee success in weather or love.

Ha-kyung, played by Park Min-young is planning her wedding to a man who she calculates is a sound choice. Ha-kyung’s mother, sensing something is wrong, takes her to a shaman to predict the success of her marriage to co-worker Han Ki-jun, played by Yoon Park.

The shaman tells Ha-kyung that if she is too careful, her life will be difficult, and also, it’s going to rain. Ha-kyung dismisses her advice. After all, she’s a professional weather forecaster. However, the shaman is right. Rain does indeed fall, as the shaman predicted, but so do more than a few tears when Ha-kyung discovers her man is far from ideal. Careful deliberations, warned the shaman, cannot help you avoid fate.

Fate arrives in the form of Lee Si-woo, a weather forecaster, who is passionate about weather, and tends to trust his gut feelings. Generally as bright as a sunny day, he’s a force to be reckoned with when he feels strongly about an impending weather system.

After her marriage plans fall apart, Ha-kyung, Ki-jun and Si-woo all wind up working in the same office, which viewers can safely predict will be stormy.

On one level, this is a romantic story about two very different people who have a lot to learn from each other, but on another it’s a fun look into the tense world of weather prediction. While that might not seem like the basis for an exciting premise, it’s interesting to see how forecasters make weather predictions, the kind of pressure they face to get them right, and the real world ramifications of issuing an extreme weather alert.

Park is a gifted comedienne and her presence can go a long way toward anticipating a drama’s success. She delivers comic charm in many dramas, including What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim and Her Private Life. Song, who has been dubbed the “Son of Netflix” for his roles in Netflix dramas such as Navillera, Love Alarm and Sweet Home, creates an enthusiastic character, a forecaster who will go out of his way to prove a point or win a heart. While these characters are initially chilly toward each other, warmer temperatures in the future are more than likely.

The drama also stars Yura of Girl’s Day, who previously appeared in Now We Are Breaking Up and Find Me In Your Memory. Yoon Park can be seen in the dramas Birthing Center and Search.
