Foo Fighters Cancel All Tour Dates After Death Of Drummer Taylor Hawkins

Topline

The Foo Fighters canceled all upcoming tour dates Tuesday in the wake of the death of their drummer, Taylor Hawkins, who died Friday after experiencing chest pains while the band was touring in South America.

Key Facts

The Foo Fighters said in a statement all future tour dates will be canceled “in light of the staggering loss of our brother.”

Hawkins experienced chest pains prior to his death in Bogota, Colombia, the city’s Secretariat of Health said, and the band canceled their Friday night performance at the Festival Estereo Picnic festival minutes before it was scheduled to begin.

A preliminary toxicology report indicated Hawkins had 10 substances in his system, including THC, tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines and opioids, according to the Colombian Attorney General’s Office.

The band had been on the road since last spring, and were set to embark on a massive North American and European tour starting next month, and continuing throughout most of the rest of 2022.

What We Don’t Know

While the Colombian Attorney General’s Office said Hawkins had several drugs in his system, his cause of death has not been shared.

Key Background

Hawkins’ death led to an outpouring of tributes from rock legends like Mick Jagger, Ringo Starr and Ozzy Osbourne. Hawkins, who previously played in Alanis Morrisette’s band, joined the Foo Fighters in 1997 and since has become widely known as one of the best drummers in the past few decades. Dave Grohl, frontman of the Foo Fighters and former Nirvana drummer, said during an interview in 2014 he didn’t miss being a drummer, because he had “the greatest drummer in the world” in his band.

Tangent

Miley Cyrus dedicated her performance at Lollapalooza Brasil on Sunday to her longtime friend. She told the crowd about the last time she spoke to Hawkins, which followed a flight to Paraguay on Wednesday. Her plane was forced to make an emergency landing after it was struck by lightning, causing her to miss a performance in the country’s capital. “The first person I called was Taylor because he was already at the festival,” Cyrus said. “And that would’ve been the time I would have gone to see my friend, and I didn’t. So it makes me really sad.”
