Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney Joins Marvel In A Mysterious Role

Euphoria has cemented the fame of some of its existing stars (Zendaya) and been a breakout launchpad for others, like Sydney Sweeney, who plays Cassie on the show. Between the past two seasons and a great turn in HBO’s The White Lotus, Sweeney is now a big enough name to be recruited for some higher profile blockbusters, including one in the Marvel space. Albeit Sony’s Marvel, not Disney’s.

According to Deadline, Sydney Sweeney has now been cast in the Madame Web movie opposite Dakota Johnson in a mystery role. This is a Sony Marvel Spider-Man-adjacent project, the ones that have…tenuous connections to the main MCU at best, despite a Venom cameo in No Way Home and a prominent Vulture cameo in the upcoming Morbius. Sony is now trying to turn a bunch of random Spider-Man characters into their own films, and we also have a Kraven the Hunter project in the works.

But nothing is as weird as Madame Web, where in the comics, she was a very old woman who did not actually fight anyone, hooked up to a life-support machine. Dakota is playing what appears to be a revamped version of Web where she will be younger, and reportedly due to the character’s psychic powers, Sony may be trying to make her their own version of Doctor Strange or something.

What’s totally unknown is what role Sydney Sweeney will play. Because she’s young and blonde, already there’s speculation that this could be the way that the Sony introduces either Gwen Stacy or Felicia Hardy, aka Black Cat. I would lean more toward Black Cat than Gwen, who seems like she’d be saved for a proper meet-up with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in a college-age Spider-Man movie, and would make her his second Euphoria-based love interest. But I also am not clear on why Black Cat would be a supporting character in a Madame Web movie instead of just…giving Sweeney her own Black Cat movie, which makes more sense than a Madame Web movie in the first place. Spider-Man rights and plans are complicated these days, so who knows.

Reportedly Sweeney took the role because she was excited to be a part of the first women-led superhero movie in this universe, but again, it’s not clear who she’s playing, and hopefully it’s not just like, Dakota Johnson’s quirky best friend, which I have to believe she can do better than at this point. My guess is she’s either a co-superhero or the main villain of the movie, though I’m at a loss for serious guesses, as I honestly don’t even think Black Cat is correct, given the context.

We’ll see if we get more info about this soon, but for now, her part remains under wraps.
