EU-Canadian Fundraising Drive For Ukrainian Refugees Raises Nearly $11 Billion

Topline

The “Stand Up for Ukraine” campaign organized by the European Commission and Canada wrapped up Saturday, raising nearly $11 billion for Ukrainian refugees, the European Commission said in a statement.

Key Facts

Of the money raised, around $9.9 billion came from a global pledging event in the Polish capital Warsaw on Saturday, the statement said.

The total amount raised includes donations for internally displaced Ukrainians and refugees and loans and grants from European public financial institutions and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, it said.

Saturday’s event in Poland concluded a global social media campaign that began March 26, which was a response to calls from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to show more support for Ukrainian refugees.

Celebrities including Billie Eilish, Bruce Springsteen, Celine Dion and Oprah Winfrey participated in the campaign, according to the campaign website.

Key Background

There have been 4.4 million refugees who have fled Ukraine, more than half to neighboring Poland, as of Friday, and 7.1 million Ukrainians have been internally displaced, according to the United Nations.
