E-Bike Theft Claims Rise 37% Year-On-Year, Reveals U.K. Insurer

E-bikes are proving popular, with thieves as well as consumers: theft claims in the U.K. “rocketed” by 37% between 2020 and 2021, reveals insurance provider Aviva.

The typical e-bike claim is $2,450, added the company with theft claims having risen by 815% since 2016.

Aviva property claims director Kelly Whittington said: “E-bikes can cost thousands of pounds, so people should consider their cover carefully. Home contents insurance often covers e-bikes while in the home, but there may be a single item limit for possessions stolen or damaged.”

She stressed: “More expensive models may need to be listed separately to ensure they are fully covered.”

Some insurance companies impose a limit for items stored in sheds and outbuildings, often around $3,000.

Specialist cycle insurance providers offer stand-alone policies for the pricier e-bikes, although such policies can be eye-waveringly expensive.
