Dallas Mavericks Looking To Add Veteran Assistant Coach After Greg St. Jean Departure

The Dallas Mavericks are shaking up their coaching staff for the third consecutive year. According to multiple reports, first-row assistant Greg St. Jean is leaving the organization.

While not the coach some Mavericks fans were clamoring to see go online, St. Jean’s departure leaves a void that head coach Jason Kidd must fill. Kidd and the organization will look to replace him with a veteran assistant coach with more experience.

Luckily for Dallas, there is a large candidate pool. The Mavericks will have several qualified coaches, including several former head coaches, to choose from to fill the open seat.

Current and former coaches like Kenny Atkinson, Mike D’Antoni, Dave Joerger, Charles Lee, Josh Longstaff, Nate McMillan, Chris Quinn, Frank Vogel and Earl Watson will likely appear on Dallas’ shortlist.

Of these names, Vogel’s sticks out. He hired Kidd in 2019 to be an assistant when he took the job of the head coach with the Los Angeles Lakers. The two were part of the Lakers’ 2020 NBA Championship team. Kidd served on Vogel’s staff until he became Dallas’ top coach in 2021.

There are also former Mavericks coaches and players available should Kidd seek out a face familiar to the organization. They include coaches Stephen Silas, Terry Stotts and former players-turned-coaches Sam Cassell and Adrian Griffin.

Regardless of who joins Kidd on the bench next season, they will be a crucial coaching staff member. St. Jean, who Kidd brought over from the Lakers in 2021, essentially served as Dallas’ offensive coordinator during the 2022-23 season. He moved into the role after Igor Koskoskov decamped for the Brooklyn Nets in the summer of 2022.

The Mavericks’ offense wasn’t an issue this season, as the team posted a 115.9 offensive rating. However, inconsistency plagued the team, especially on the defensive end. A veteran coach, perhaps with some head coaching experience, could help improve the team’s stability.
