CW-Style Cuts Come To HBO Max, First ‘Raised By Wolves,’ Now Maybe ‘The Flight Attendant’

Yesterday, as the cast predicted, Raised by Wolves was officially cancelled by HBO Max after two seasons without a coherent conclusion for its arc. The cast is trying to get fans to rally to push for a third season somewhere else, a tall order, but certainly one that’s not impossible.

But this is part of a larger story where the giant Warner/Discovery deal has thrown a ton of series into chaos or cancellation. The CW has been axing shows left and right while greenlight a few new things that are downright baffling. But now it seems like Netflix-style cuts are coming to HBO Max as well, which is cited by the cast in the Raised by Wolves cancellation.

Another HBO Max favorite could be next, though in this case, it might be because of its star, rather than the merger. That would be The Flight Attendant, the Kaley Cuoco spy comedy that just wrapped its second season. Cuoco seems to want the show to be over after a season 2, even though she says others may want a third season:

“We did two — we should probably be done,” Cuoco told People. “I think I’ve been outnumbered with that thought; there’s definitely interest in doing a third season. I think for me, at this moment, the plane has landed.”

For HBO’s part, they say “no official decision” has been made about the show yet.

Cuoco was nominated for an Emmy for the first season, and probably should be nominated for the second, given the performance she puts in, though I’ll say I thought the overall show quality dropped in season 2. Perhaps Cuoco felt the same. Unlike Raised by Wolves, The Flight Attendant season 2 probably did end conclusively enough for fans. Even if there’s some sort of much larger conspiracy afoot, Cassie’s journey in particular does seem like it could end there, but we’ll see.

So, what is HBO Max interested in? Peacemaker got another season and the service is moving forward with at least the Penguin spin-off of The Batman. But so far, it doesn’t seem like it’s ramping up for a full Marvel-scale streaming production as they figure out what to do with the DC Universe as a whole next. But for all intents and purposes, the CW-spawned Arrowverse is more or less dead, outside the final season of The Flash and Superman and Lois, which likes to pretend it didn’t spawn from the Arrowverse with almost no references to it.

HBO Max did recently renew fan favorite gay pirate comedy, Our Flag Means Death, after nearly two months of making fans sweat about a series that should have gotten a season 2 pickup the moment it ended. It’s very clear things are pretty chaotic over there right now, and unless a specific renewal has already been announced, more or less anything is fair game to go at this point, it seems.
