Crisis With Russia And Why The Fate Of Ukraine Matters

Given the bitter results of America’s long wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, many people are questioning why we should get involved in Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. The country is not part of NATO. We’re not legally obliged to defend it.

Unfortunately, however, as this episode of What’s Ahead explains, what happens in Ukraine won’t stay in Ukraine. It is part of a huge and ominous trend in the world. Russia and China want a new world order in which rule by dictatorship is the norm and authoritarianism is regarded as the wave of the future.

Putin thirsts not only to undo the loss of the Cold War but also to destroy U.S. power and influence in Europe. Xi Jinping envisions a world that kowtows to Beijing the way Asian states did to China in the days when emperors ruled its empire.

The U.S. needs to devise a new strategy the way it did in the aftermath of WWII.
