BTS, Psy, And Now Jimin

South Korean pop star Jimin has hit the top of the charts in America this week with his single “Like Crazy,” surprising some and showing he’s a hitmaker with BTS and as a soloist. The track debuts at No. 1, bringing Jimin to both the summit and the top 10 for the first time in his solo career. He joins two other South Korean musical acts as he makes a still-rare showing of popularity in the largest music market in the world.

With “Like Crazy” now inside the highest tier, Jimin becomes just
just
the third South Korean act to hit the top 10 on the Hot 100. He’s in good company, as one of the other acts is the band that made him a star.

The first South Korean musical act to score a top 10 single on the Hot 100 was Psy, whose world-rattling “Gangnam Style” soared to No. 2 over a decade ago, making waves
waves
and helping to introduce millions to K-pop.

Psy’s success continued when he collected a second top 10 the following year in 2013, when “Gentleman” peaked at No. 5. For several years, he was the only South Korean musician to appear inside the most competitive region on the tally until BTS came along.

BTS has thus far racked up 10 top 10 hits on the Hot 100, adding to their total just a few months ago. The seven-member vocal band first reached the arena in 2018 with “Fake Love,” which stalled at No. 10.

The septet has sent at least one song into the Hot 100’s top 10 each year until 2023, both on their own and with the help of others such as Halsey, Benny Blanco, and Snoop Dogg. The septet has accrued six No. 1s on the Hot 100 as well, more than many popular Western acts.

So far, BTS has broken into the top 10 on the Hot 100 with all of the following singles: “Fake Love,” “Boy with Luv” with Halsey, “On,” “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” with Jason Derulo and Jawsh 685, “Dynamite,” “Life Goes On,” “Butter,” “Permission to Dance,” “My Universe” with Coldplay and most recently, “Bad Decisions” with Snoop Dogg and Benny Blanco.
