According to the New York Daily News, Mayor Eric Adams said over 32 people “are life-threatening at this time,” adding “This is going to be one of the worst fires we have witnessed during modern times in the city of New York.”
The five-alarm fire reportedly broke out shortly before 11 a.m. at a residential building in the Fordham Heights neighborhood.
According to ABC News, the fire has since been put out.
New York City Fire Department Commissioner Daniel Nigro said at a press conference that “numerous fatalities” are expected.
