Britney Spears Reaches Another Billboard Chart For The First Time With Her Surprise New Single

Britney Spears hasn’t released new music of her own in years, as she was busy fighting the conservatorship that ruled every aspect of her life for more than a decade. She has hinted at recording tunes recently, but so far, it’s all just rumors and speculation. The pop superstar has just scored a new chart hit with a tune that uses her vocals from an old cut, and this week, it helps the Grammy winner reach another Billboard chart for the first time in her career.

Altego’s “Toxic Pony” debuts on this week’s Hot R&B Songs chart, Billboard’s ranking of the most-consumed tracks in America that can be classified as R&B. The cut arrives at No. 25, in last place. It’s the first win for not just lead artist Altego, but also for both featured stars Ginuwine and Spears.

“Toxic Pony” is a mashup of Spears’ single “Toxic” and Ginuwine’s generation-defining smash “Pony.” The producer and mixer blended the pair and turned the compositions into something new and fresh. After going viral on TikTok, the tune has been appearing on a number of Billboard lists, some of which Spears had never reached before, including the Hot R&B Songs list.

Less than a month ago, “Toxic Pony” debuted on two purchase-only Billboard charts. The track broke into the top 10 on the R&B Digital Song Sales chart, giving Spears her first win on the R&B-only roster. At the same time, the clever reworking entered the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart at No. 17. Spears had pushed one remixed single to that tally before, nearly a decade prior.

Last week, “Toxic Pony” officially became a cross-genre smash. The title debuted at No. 40 on the Pop Airplay chart, which lists the tunes that reach the largest audience at pop radio in the U.S.  It gave Spears her first radio hit in years, and it showed that interest in anything connected to her is still at an all-time high. The mashup has disappeared from that list this week, though it could return again soon.
