The United Kingdom—and many of Queen Elizabeth II’s admirers around the world—entered a period of mourning Thursday following her death at age 96, ending the longest reign of any monarch in British history.

The Royal Family announced at 6:30 p.m. local time the queen “died peacefully at Balmoral,” a castle in Scotland.

Flags were immediately lowered to half-staff around the U.K. following the announcement of the queen’s death, while massive crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace in London.

Mourners lined up to lay flowers at the Palace and at many other locations Elizabeth frequented throughout her life, including Windsor Castle and Kensington Palace.
