Bank Of England To Become Stablecoin Issuers’ Savior?

Bank Of England On The Rescue

The Bank of England made an announcement yesterday that it will disrupt to direct and oversee the shattering Stablecoins should the bank decide that stablecoin issuer is now officially a systematic failure.

The news came through a document created by HM Treasury in response to a digital asset consultation which was initiated in January 2021 and concluded this year in April.

Britain’s authorities proposed to make amendments in the Financial Market Infrastructure Special Administration Regime of UK to bring cryptocurrencies within the Central bank of England’s jurisdiction, while offering the institution the reins in case of collapsing stablecoin.

The authorities made it crystal clear that they will intervene only if there is a systemic collapse, which it defines as any “scarcities in the system’s model or disruption to their operations  might threaten the UK financial system’s steadiness.

Crypto And UK

Similar to US, British authorities have so far taken a majorly hands off approach to digital assets, but the boom in crypto sphere since 2021 has gradually introduced the idea of regulation into the political debate of Britain.

During April 2021, HM Treasury and Bank of England deployed a CBDC Task Force to traverse the prospect of a CBDC issued by Central Bank.

A CBDC is basically a stablecoin issued by the state, so in case of Bank of England, CBDC would be a virtual sterling.

So far Westminster has taken infant steps this far, but has given a confirmation that stablecoins will be pulled within the regulation so as to have them utilized “in United Kingdom as a identified form of Payment.”

British authorities are going to issue an NFT too by joining hands with the Royal Mint too.

Just the previous month, the FCA director stated to Bloomberg that British cryptocurrency regulations will be required to take Terra ecosystem’s collapse into account.

She stated that, Innovation only lasts if it work well, and folks have already witnessed the consequences and the potential problems that can arise.
