Anne Hathaway is not primarily known for her musical skills, but the Oscar-winning star has taken on roles in the past that have helped her nurture her gift of singing. Her latest film, Mother Mary, is another such project. As that movie gets off to a slow start at the global box office, Hathaway scores an unlikely win on one music chart in the United Kingdom, reaching that tally – but not any tally – for the first time.
Mother Mary: Greatest Hits Debuts as a Bestseller
In most cases, any album or EP connected to a film project, be it a movie or TV series, would land on the Official Soundtrack Albums chart in the U.K., but it appears that Mother Mary: Greatest Hits is being promoted somewhat differently. Instead of a simple soundtrack, the full-length is apparently, at least in that country, being marketed as a compilation of the biggest singles by the musical act known as Mother Mary, whom Hathaway portrays in the film.
This week, Mother Mary: Greatest Hits launches on the Official Album Downloads chart, the list of the top-selling short efforts and full-lengths on digital storefronts like iTunes and Amazon throughout the U.K., at No. 57.
Anne Hathaway Trails Zayn, Ben Platt and Rachel Zegler
The Official Album Downloads chart features 100 spaces, and more than a quarter of them are occupied by debuts this time around. Hathaway’s is not one of the top performers, and it trails new offerings from names like Zayn, Jessie Ware, Nine Inch Nails, and even fellow actors Rachel Zegler and Ben Platt. Their collaborative The Last Five Years – 20th Anniversary kicks off at No. 43.
Anne Hathaway’s “I Dreamed a Dream” Previously Charted
Hathaway scores her first hit album in the U.K. this week, but Mother Mary: Greatest Hits does not mark her first trip to the charts in that country. In January 2013, her take on “I Dreamed a Dream,” which she performed in the filmed version of Les Misérables, launched on both the Official Singles Downloads and Official Singles rosters. That latter list looks at the most-consumed songs in the U.K., and both sales and streaming data are included in its methodology. “I Dreamed a Dream” would go on to spend half a dozen frames on the pair of registers, peaking at No. 20 on the downloads-only chart and at No. 22 on the most competitive songs list in the U.K.
Anne Hathaway Has Five Movies Coming in 2026
2026 is gearing up to be a huge year for Hathaway, as she has no less than five movies set to be released before 2027. Mother Mary is the first of that bunch, and the project enjoyed a limited release beginning on April 17. The film also stars Michaela Coel, Kaia Gerber, and Hunter Schafer, and it includes original songs written and produced by music industry favorites like Jack Antonoff, Charli XCX, and FKA Twigs, who also acts in the movie.
Hathaway’s next release will be The Devil Wears Prada 2, scheduled to arrive in theaters globally on Friday (May 1). She will also star in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer follow-up The Odyssey, and later in both The End of Oak Street and Verity.
