Allen Lazard’s Signing With The New York Jets Could Mean Aaron Rodgers Is Close Behind

If Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers eventually makes his way to the Big Apple, he’ll find at least one of his former teammates waiting for him.

According to multiple reports, wide receiver Allen Lazard agreed to a four-year, $44 million deal with the New York Jets Tuesday. Lazard can officially sign the deal Wednesday when the NFL’s free agent period officially begins.

The 27-year-old Lazard set career-highs with 60 catches for 788 yards last season. He also had six touchdown receptions, which were the second-most of his career.

The 6-foot-5, 227-pound Lazard is also regarded as one of the top blocking wide receivers in the league.

“The thing that gets lost a lot of times when you talk wide receiver play is he’s an enforcer in the run game,” Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur said of Lazard last season. “Whether it’s blocking the linebackers, obviously DBs, cracking outside linebackers or D-ends. This guy, he can do it all.”

Green Bay offensive coordinator Adam Stenovich agreed.

“He opens up your playbook,” Stenavich said of Lazard. “Obviously, he can do a great job in the passing game with a bunch of different routes and depths in the routes and all that stuff. But he also allows you to attack certain defenses where normally you would need a tight end (or offensive lineman) to do the blocking.

“You can use him in a lot of instances to give yourself advantage. He’s definitely a really good piece for our offense to give us the best schematic advantage.”

The Packers and Jets are trying to finalize a trade that would send Rodgers to New York. Rodgers reportedly has asked the Jets to acquire some of his favorite Green Bay players such as wideouts Lazard and Randall Cobb, and tight end Marcedes Lewis, as well as Odell Beckham Jr.

With Lazard now a member of the Jets, Rodgers shouldn’t be far behind.
