Celebrities from the world of fashion and music gathered yesterday to pay their respects to fashion disruptor, Dame Vivienne Westwood DBE. Amongst them were Stormzy, Kate Moss and Dame Helena Bonham Carter.
Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour and British Vogue editor Edward Enninful alongside designers Dame Zandra Rhodes, Erdem Moralioglu and Victoria Beckham were also in attendance at the memorial to mark Westwood’s long career in fashion and as an environmental activist.
The memorial was held at Southwark cathedral yesterday, on the eve of London Fashion Week and celebrated the life of the fashion icon who died in December aged 81.
Established in London’s Kings Road in the 1970’s, Westwood’s boutique, Sex, represents a critical chapter in the story of punk rock in the UK. Her signature provocative clothing adorned with tears, safety pins and explicit slogans became part of the unofficial look of this rebellious movement.
Organisers of this year’s London Fashion Week have dedicated it to the memory of Westwood and her legacy acknowledging her ‘positive change globally’. Running from Friday 17 to Tuesday 21 February, this event welcomes a line-up of 127 brands in a hybrid event with 104 physical activations and events and 41 digital activations taking place within the schedule.
Organisers of the five-day fashion event have dedicated it in the memory of Westwood and her legacy acknowledging her ‘positive change globally’.
The event will also host Ukrainian Fashion Week on Tuesday 21st February showcasing the work of three Ukrainian designers: Frolov, Kseniaschnaider and Paskal.
Shows starting today include Paul Costelloe, Bora Aksu and Huishan Zhang and on Saturday, featured designers includeEand Paul & Joe.
Charity Oxfam attracted the press with the first catwalk to kick 0ff this five-day celebration of fashion. Models for the charity’s fashion event included Erin O’Connor and trans-activist Munroe Bergdorf who were dressed in pre-loved clothing to help shine a spotlight on the potential of the recommerce fashion marketplace.
Vogue and Snapchat have partnered the fashion week event to create an immersive exhibition curated by Edward Enninful OBE. Illustrating how augmented reality can transform the realm of physical fashion, the free to access digital experience enables the general public to be part of the fashion week action.
London Fashion Week is set to be an inspiring event of creative and innovative visionaries, showcasing the best of London’s fashion industry to the world. Hosted by The British Fashion Council, this event celebrates fashion, culture, and technology all in one; a highly appropriate tribute to the creativity of Dame Vivienne Westwood.
