20 People Reportedly Trapped In Albuquerque Tram Car, Rescue Underway

Rescue workers in Albuquerque, New Mexico began an operation Saturday to evacuate at least 20 people trapped in an aerial tram car on the Sandia Peak Tramway since at least 2 a.m., according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and local media.

ABC News affiliate KOAT reported that the car was stuck due to icy conditions.

The Tramway’s general manager told the outlet that everyone onboard is in good condition and that they have water and blankets.

According to an alert Saturday on the company’s website the tram and the restaurant atop the Sandia Peak are both closed due to weather, specifically high winds.

The sheriff’s office’s Metro Air Support was aiding in evacuation efforts, according to a Facebook livestream by the office, and they plan to evacuate people in groups of 2-4.

The Albuquerque Journal reported that two groups of four had been brought down to the base as of noon.
