More Than 3,600 Crypto Trademark Applications Filed in 2022

As of August 2022, more than 3,600 crypto-related trademark applications have been filed in the United States. This number exceeds the total amount of trademark filings captured for the entire year of 2021.

According to data published by trademark and patent attorney Michael Kondoudis on September 6, over 3,600 crypto-related trademark applications have been filed in the U.S., far exceeding the total amount of filings in 2021 which reached 3,516. At the end of August, the total number of patents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) stood at 3,899, and more are expected to be filed in the next couple of months. After reaching a high point in March, when the number of new applications was 604, the number of new applications has been on a steady decline every month in parallel with the market downturn. In August 2022, the number of new applications filed stood at 329.

Data was also published for NFT and metaverse-related trademark applications. The patterns seemed to follow that of crypto-related trademark applications and reached a high point in March with a total of 1,078 new applications filed, making the total NFT-related trademark applications stand at over 5,800 for the year. In 2021, the total number of new NFT-related trademark applications came to 2,087 – a significantly lower amount than filed so far this year. Several factors have forced the need to register trademarks, including rooting out fraudulent duplicates which have been on the rise.

Notably, Sony Music filed a trademark application for the Columbia Records logo with plans to use it for NFT-backed media, music and podcast production, artist management, and music distribution services. Kondoudis announced the news on Twitter saying:

SonyMusic has filed a trademark application for the Columbia Records logo claiming plans to use it for NFT Backed MediaMusic + Podcast Production Artist Management + Music distribution services ..and more!

With regards to applications for the metaverse, virtual and Web3 applications, the total number of applications filed doubled from 2021’s 1,866 to 4,150 applications.
