Japan’s Leading Mobile Messenger LINE All Set To Test Crypto Payments

Japanese messaging app LINE is expanding its crypto services. LINE Pay, the fintech arm and operator of the digital wallet of the messaging company, announced that it will allow users of the payment service to pay online with LINK (LN). LINK is the native token of the LINE blockchain. The offer will roll out on a trial basis to selected online merchants from March 16 to December 26, 2022, in Japan.

LINE plans to make its LINK token a payment option

The statement adds that during the trial, users will be able to pay with LINK commission-free on LINE Pay. The company envisions that the addition of the option will significantly improve the experience of LINE Pay users.

By connecting LINK to LINE Pay as a payment solution, LINE Pay aims to expand users’ payment options, increase convenience, and grow the real-life usages for LINK,  the statement said.

LINK (LN) is only the first in many more digital currencies that LINE Pay will integrate. LINE Pay said that it plans to consider adding other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum as check-out options for online payments in the future.

LINE plans to drive crypto adoption through its blockchain

The LINE blockchain has been working on giving its LINK token more use cases. LINK is being used on the platforms crypto exchange to pay fees when trading cryptocurrencies. The messaging giant with over 84 million active monthly users in its home country, plans to make crypto-assets become a part of the everyday life of its users.

In a previous statement, the company announced that it was working on taking its NFT marketplace worldwide. The platform which will be named LINE NEXT will operate out of the US and South Korea. Back in 2018, Line also announced that it was working on a cryptocurrency exchange app.

Meanwhile, crypto adoption has been sweeping across other major social media platforms. In 2022, several social media giants including YouTube, Meta, Twitter, and Reddit have all either unveiled crypto integrations or shown interest in them.
