Iconic Food chain Mcdonald’s is well-known worldwide and is a fan’s favorite. It often can also be seen making headlines in the crypto world too. Let’s explore its relation with the crypto world at different times.

McDonald’s Celebrate McRib’s 40th Anniversary, Announces Creation Of NFTs

In November of 2021, McDonald’s announced the creation of a limited number of NFTs as a celebration of the 40th anniversary of its McRib sandwich,.

McDonald’s McRib is a barbecue-flavored pork sandwich. It was first added to McDonald’s menu in 1981. As a result of poor sales, it was removed from the menu in 1985. It made its comeback in 1989, continuing to be present on the menu until 2005 in many countries.

From 2006 onwards, it is made available for a short period each year, generally during the fall season, in most areas. Although, it is a permanent item in McDonald’s restaurants in Germany and Luxembourg.

In a statement, McDonald’s explained that McRib NFTs are the digital version of the fan-favorite sandwich, claiming it to be “as saucy as the McRib itself.” They even give away a few NFTs to lucky fans on Twitter in November 2021.

In a short span of time, the NFT craze has skyrocketed, with many celebrities buying NFTs. Recently, Justin Beiber bought the trendy, Bored Ape Yacht NFTs. Digital artist Beeple made around $69.3 million through the acquisition of an image collage.

In simple words, NFTs are digital files that operate on blockchain technology. Networks such as Bitcoin and Ethereum stand on the same technology.

NFTs or non-fungible tokens, however, are unique. The blockchain ledger behind it verifies the one-of-a-kind item. NFTs, once recorded, can not be changed in any case by anyone, and that’s why that’s desirable. NFTs can be anything like images, digital art, video clips, or SMS.

To make it more clear, take this instance, Sotheby’s, a British-founded American multinational corporation headquartered in New York City, sold the original source code for the World Wide Web written by its inventor Tim Berners-Lee for $5.4m in June.

In the weeks after McRib NFT dropped sweepstakes, McDonald’s reached out to winners on Twitter.

One Friday night, a trader with the Twitter handle @ok_0S pointed out that the Ethereum address associated with the official McDonald’s McRib NFT collection had a racial slur.

The digital trail was the indication that McDonald’s official Twitter account is directly linked to the Ethereum Blockchain transaction that contains the slur.

Although it might seem that someone with prior knowledge of the account wrote and posted it before the creation of McRib’s NFTs, there was a nearly five-hour interval between McDonald’s tweet and the first transaction.

McDonald’s Registers For 10 Trademarks In Virtual Space

Last month, McDonald’s announced that it would be registered for ten trademarks in the virtual space. A trademark is an intellectual property that includes a recognizable sign, design, or expression that helps recognize a product from a particular source and differentiates it from others.

In a tweet, Josh Gerben, trademark attorney and founder of Gerben Intellectual Property, revealed that McDonald’s submitted a trademark application that included the brand’s future venture: “a virtual restaurant featuring actual and virtual goods” and “operating a virtual restaurant featuring home delivery.

It was further revealed that the restaurant chain would offer “downloadable multimedia files” for artwork, audio and video files, and non-fungible tokens (NFT).

Furthermore, McDonald’s also offers its McCafe brand in the metaverse trademark application. Besides, the brand also plans to provide entertainment services such as online actual and virtual concerts and other events.

The golden arches collaborated with Panera Bread, a bakery and cafe chain, to take its brand into the metaverse.

It is no secret that Tesla CEO Elon Musk supports Dogecoin, a Japanese Shiba Inu-themed cryptocurrency. Elon Musk is one of the significant reasons behind Dogecoin’s immense popularity. He even went on to say that Dogecoin is better for transactions than Bitcoin.

Musk also announced quite recently that Tesla, on a test basis, would be accepting Dogecoin for merchandise. Musk tweeted, “Tesla will make some merch buyable with Doge and see how it goes” Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer created Dogecoin in 2013 as a fun and fast alternative to Bitcoin.

Dogecoin’s value spiked after Elon Musk tweeted he would eat McDonald’s Happy Meal on television if McDonald’s accepts meme-based cryptocurrency, Dogecoin. The popular happy meal comes with a toy and includes a red cardboard box with a yellow smiley face.

Responding to Musk’s tweet, McDonald’s responded, saying they would but “only if Tesla accepts Grimacecoin.” And that’s everything some people needed to create an actual cryptocurrency called GrimaceCoin on the Binance Smart Chain and launch it on the market.

McDonald’s responded quite sarcastically to Musk’s tweet and said they would do as Musk asks; however, only if Tesla accepts Grimacecoin. Grimacecoin is a rotund purple character that often gets featured in McDonald’s marketing campaigns.

There were many other crazy responses to Elon Musk’s tweet, besides, of course, Mcdonald’s. Creator of Dogecoin, Shibetoshi Nakamoto, also tweeted this:

Now Hungry Virtual Gamers Can Order Big Mac From McDonald’s in the Metaverse

Josh Gerben tweeted a new development regarding McDonald’s entering metaverse.

Gerben explained in a series of tweets that virtual reality gamers will be able to walk in McD and place an order “without [putting] down your headset.” The virtual burgers would be delivered directly to the gamers’ door after being prepared by a brick-and-mortar McDonald’s.

It’s not the first time McDonald’s is venturing into the metaverse. In January, it partnered with Humberto Leon, a Chinese-Peruvian fashion designer curating an interactive virtual exhibit for celebrating Lunar New Year.

Launched on January 31, The McDonald’s Hall of Zodiacs could be attended through virtual reality platforms such as AltspaceVR and Spatial. It could also be accessed through a desktop browser without a VR headset. The exhibit consists of Leon’s interpretations of the 12 animals in the lunar cycle. Based on their birth year and zodiac animal, users can also get a personalized horoscope for 2022.
