With the advent of blockchain technology, experts believe that several industries may benefit from its application. However, the gaming sector is not one of them. A majority of gamers have rejected integration of this advancement into traditional gaming. State of the Game Industry 2023 indicates the same. A survey involving 2,300 developers shows that the sentiment of the community has not changed yet.
The Sentiment Has Not Changed Yet
45% game developers say that “the metaverse will never deliver what it promises.” Meanwhile 14% of the respondents believe that Fortnite, a battle royale game by Epic Games, have the potential to do this. While 7% think that Microsoft owned Minecraft can be the perfect platform to fulfill the vision.
The survey shed light over potential aspects to render the metaverse sustainable. Developers believe that it needs a clear definition. Even the individuals trying to sell the concept aren’t aware of what it actually is. Moreover, it needs to be more interactive to offer a fully immersive experience to the users.
The hardware currently required to access metaverse comes at a hefty cost which makes it difficult for a person generating moderate income to afford these devices. Meta Quest Pro was launched with a price tag of $1,500. Apple is scheduled to release its headgear at some point this year. There’s no chance the company will go less than the value their rival in this metaverse race put on their product.
Another issue remains that the existing hardwares does not meet the requirement to create a perfect metaverse. Problems like blurry texts, long loading time and more still persist even after these hardwares have evolved to a great extent in the past 20 years. This raises a need for either better equipment or skillful developers to optimize the ecosystems.
The report also points toward better standardization of controls. Usually, a gamer finds it difficult to play the game after switching a platform. Same thing would happen in the metaverse considering the equipment required to access virtual spaces. This is similar when a Call of Duty Mobile player switches from 2 finger setup to 4 finger claw.
Some gaming organizations are planning to use blockchain as an underlying tech to enhance video games. This means that NFTs may become an integral part of video games. However, traditional gamers have opposed the integration of non-fungible tokens in the past. The report shows that the sentiment has remained the same. While 14% of people are in favor of using the technology, 61% are not.
Studio interest in blockchain is not considerable either. Only 23% are somewhat interested in the technology, meanwhile 75% of the respondents show no interest at all. Moreover, only 2% of them are using it in their projects.
Finally, the report notes that blockchain may prove valuable in future but a few of its use cases remain “predatory and unsustainable.” Furthermore, some developers think that the tech may enable financial fraud while others believe that fraudsters have deserted the sector and now’s the time to do experiments with this technology for positive player experiences.
