Marathon is shifting its bitcoin miners to some new locations from Montana

Cryptocurrency mining, especially bitcoin mining mostly being targeted due to energy consumption and environmental issues; sometimes resulting in relocations of miners

One of the leading digital asset companies in America, Marathon Digital Holding, has plans to shift its bitcoin miner out of Montana, where the company has its coal-powered facility. The company took such steps to follow its commitment to move along with less energy consumption and be more environmentally friendly regarding their crypto mining activities.

On Tuesday, the company said that it would shift to new locations and the efforts come out in order to meet the goals that it announced previously. The goal of the bitcoin mining company is to become 100% carbon neutral before the 2022 end and that the new locations would have more sustainable sources of power. However, information regarding the new locations has not been disclosed.

According to the announcement, the company’s transition is assumed to take place during the third quarter of the year. Marathon has announced previously its plan to deploy 199,000 bitcoin miners by the first quarter of 2023, along with the goal of reaching a computing power of 23.3 exahash per second (EH/s). The Bitcoin mining company said that it would deploy 100,000 miners to several sites across Texas, out of which most would be wind and solar-powered farms in association with Compute North.

New mining sites of Marathon will source behind the meter energy in an effort in order to avoid transmission lines congestion, as per the company’s statement.

CEO and chairman of Marathon Fred Thiel said that majority of their field is scheduled to deploy already at facilities having renewable power supplies, and deployments are currently underway, and the company has the belief that it is an appropriate time for them to transition the legacy operation that was running on fossil fuel generation traditionally to away from them towards more sustainable power sources.

Most of the other firms have also stated their efforts to shift to greener power sources facilities as they are mounting pressure from critics of the energy-intensive nature of bitcoin mining. This Monday, a new governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report was released, citing crypto as a major carbon emission source.
