Colorado Based Bitcoin Miner To Expand Operation To Texas, Might Consume Power To Light 200,000 Homes

In April, Riot Blockchain (RIOT), the Colorado-based bitcoin mining company highlighted its plans to expand its operations to Corsicana, Texas, in an attempt to utilize enough power to light up to 200,000 homes.

Riot Blockchain is one of the largest Bitcoin (BTC) miners in the country, and currently operates a 400-megawatt facility in Rockdale, Texas. Disclosing that they are providing 265-million dollars for a virtual crypto mining operation. There were acres in the process of the site development, which is expected to open in Corsicana in July 2023.

The company highlights that it would eventually have electricity to light 200,000 homes, the first phase of the facility will utilize around 400 megawatts of electricity to power around 80,000 Corsicana homes. 

According to Riot CEO Jason Less, Upon completion of the expansion, Riot’s developed capacity will total 1.7 GW, which will make the company one of the largest bitcoin mining operations worldwide.

And that the company’s ability to source such a considerable expansion opportunity in Texas exemplifies the company’s partnership-driven approach with all stakeholders, comprising the company’s business partners, ERCOT, and all government levels, to drive sustainable economic growth.

Furthermore, the company signifies that the first 400 MW phase alone is expected to give rise to around 270 jobs in the region.

Riot Blockchain currently runs a mining facility in Rockdale, about 50 miles northeast of Austin, called Whinston, with a total power capacity of 750 megawatts. It is addressed as the single largest facility in North America by dedicated capacity for bitcoin mining.

Supposedly, the City of Arlington’s Priority Power Management will look over the site development, power purchase agreements, utility interconnection, and power load flexibility for the mining facility.
