Bitcoin Pizza Day: other initiatives to celebrate 12 years

It has been 12 years since a cryptocurrency enthusiast, Laszlo Hanyecz, bought two pizzas with 10,000 BTC, exactly on 22 May 2010, marking the world’s first physical Bitcoin transaction.

And like every year, all the big crypto players create competitions to celebrate it. In addition to Binance, also Huobi Global joins the “Bitcoin Pizza Day” club, giving away 1 BTC to the 100 winners who buy a pizza in DOGE and follow the following instructions:

“Happy #HuobiPizzaDay. 12 yrs ago Laszlo bought 2 pizza w/ 10,000 BTC, 12 yrs later, who will be the 1st one to buy a Pizza with $DOGE? 100 WINNERS share 1 BTC

  • Take a photo of the pizza you bought w/ DOGE, RT+ @HuobiGlobal
  • @elonmusk to eat the pizza together

Fill in”.

Pizza DAO, the decentralized blockchain project that seeks to unite the global community of pizza fanatics with the technological potential of Web3, is also celebrating Bitcoin Pizza Day on Sunday.

This involves hosting commemorative events in 100 pizzerias in over 75 countries around the world, including the US, Argentina, South Korea, Ethiopia, Australia, Canada, the UK and more.

Not only that, Pizza DAO plans to launch an NFT and attract a charity campaign with already numerous supporters including 13-time world pizza champion Tony Gemignani, Seth Green, Steve Aoki, the Dogecoin team and comedians Cheech and Chong.

The price of BTC: today those pizzas are worth $300 million

The history of Bitcoin price from the famous Bitcoin Pizza Day

One interesting thing to note is how much the price of Bitcoin has varied in the 12 years since Pizza Day. Funny how much the dollar value of the 10,000 BTC used by Laszlo Hanyecz for his two pizzas has changed over the years.

In 2010, 10,000 BTC was worth about $43, here’s what happened next:

  • 2011: less than $100,000;
  • 2012: over $100,000;
  • 2013: about $1.2 million;
  • 2014: about $5.1 million;
  • 2015: about $2.3 million;
  • 2016: approximately $4.4 million;
  • 2017 approximately $22 million;
  • 2018: approximately $78 million;
  • 2019: approximately $60 million;
  • 2020: over $92 million;
  • 2021: over $375 million;

Today, taking into account that BTC currently stands at $30,000, 10,000 BTC is equivalent to $300 million.
