MetaMask CEO Criticizes Apple’s 30% Tax Cut on Transactions

  • Dan Finlay said that he is ready to join Coinbase in abandoning the Apple ecosystem.
  • Co-founder of MetaMask suggested launching a new prepay transaction relay service.

Coinbase Wallet said on Thursday that it would no longer allow NFT transfers for iOS customers because of the 30% gas tax that Apple adds to each transaction. In response to Apple’s drastic cutbacks, MetaMask wallet co-founder Dan Finlay said that he is ready to join Coinbase in abandoning the Apple ecosystem. Finlay criticized Apple’s monopoly and 30% levies, adding, “Are they going to take 30% of my credit card transactions in Apple Wallet too?”

Apple testified recently against Epic Games, claiming that the idea of a 30% tax originated in the game sector. Finlay explains that this is why services like Netflix are exempt from it.

New Prepay Transaction Relay Service

This year, Apple unveiled its new approach to taxing NFTs and crypto transactions. Apple’s latest stance, however, is in accord with the court’s order. The judge in Apple’s case against Epic Games ruled that the company must implement certain in-app purchase mechanisms.

To assist Apple consumers in evading this huge taxation structure, Dan Finlay, co-founder of MetaMask, has suggested launching a new prepay transaction relay service.

In an attack on Apple, Finlay asserted:

“Apple isn’t following any rules here. They’re just squeezing. Maybe it’s time to set up an external prepay tx relay service, so that in app there are “no fees”. Apple’s nonsense came can be gamed fairly easily, because it’s nonsense. Apple makes me feel rebellious”.

However, Finlay claims to have spoken with Google’s upper management. According to him, Google is more interested in working inside the system than just imposing its own policy changes.
