India High Commission Twitter Now Promoting Ripple Giveaway Scam

It appears to be the same group of scammers that gained access to News 24’s Twitter account, as it promotes the same scam giveaway.

Scammers have used the Twitter account of the High Commission of India to Malawi to promote a Ripple giveaway scam.

The verified account with nearly 22,000 followers most recently promoted the scam hours ago in the comments of popular XRP community influencer WrathofKahneman (@WKahneman). From The Crypto Basic’s investigation, it has consistently done so under the comments of popular crypto accounts since March 15, with the first tweet in response to a Bitcoin Archive post.

It appears to be the same group of scammers that gained access to News 24’s Twitter account, as it promotes the same scam giveaway. As reported, the Twitter account of the popular Hindi news channel curiously appeared to operate as usual, posting news updates despite the potential breach. Like News 24, The Crypto Basic has reached out to the Indian High Commission and has yet to receive feedback at the time of writing.

As highlighted in the previous report, the post directs users to a Medium-type blog post purportedly authored by Ripple Chief Executive Officer Brad Garlinghouse. It claims that the blockchain payments firm is offering access to a 100,000,000 XRP airdrop pool to appreciate its supporters, luring unsuspecting victims to click on a registration link.

Scams like this are not uncommon in the crypto space or finance in general and have seen users lose fortunes due to brief lapses in judgment. Earlier this month, Shiba Inu community members were the target of a similar exploit, with many victims losing all their SHIB holdings.

At the time of writing, there have been no reports of users losing assets to the Ripple giveaway scam. It also remains unclear why the scammers have recently chosen to exploit verified Hindi Twitter accounts. The Crypto Basic has reported the tweet and encourages others to do the same to prevent users from falling victim.
