On Thursday, Discord Inc. unveiled a slew of plans to extend artificial intelligence (AI) products on its widely used chat platform. One of these initiatives involves the integration of the AI chatbot ChatGPT — developed by OpenAI — into the company’s official chatbot Clyde and in moderating servers, which are similar to groups or communities.
Discord Integrates ChatGPT
According to the firm, millions of people currently utilize AI apps on Discord every month to create content ranging from gaming assets to a jointly written novel, and approximately ten percent of new users join the app to participate in its numerous AI communities. To further bolster the company’s AI initiatives, Discord is set to integrate ChatGPT into its Clyde chatbot.
The new and updated version of Clyde will be made available to users for free during a public trial that is slated to take place in the coming weeks. Following a successful trial, it can be added to Discord servers by their respective admins — allowing users to interact with it, have it react to inquiries, respond to GIF-based messages and even recommend music, among other capabilities. As functionality grows, Clyde can even start new threads in channels to make it easier for groups of friends to have chats with one another.

In an interview with a noted media outlet, Anjney Midha, the head of Discord’s platform ecosystem was quoted as saying:
Clyde has been alive on Discord for years and years, and we’ve always been interested in figuring out how to make interacting with Clyde smarter, better, and more fun.
However, a myriad of new ChatGPT alternatives have flooded the market in an effort to compete with the industry’s most prominent AI chatbot. Even the crypto sector has a similar offering, CryptoGPT, which claims to rival the likes of ChatGPT & Google’s Bard AI.
Discord To Drive AI Growth
Discord first came into the spotlight with its unique gaming-based voice-chat program, but it has since expanded to become a hub for all kinds of interactions via text, audio, and video. It currently houses 150 million members spread among 19 million servers, which are essentially interest-based groups. It’s to be noted that the Midjourney Discord server, which boasts 13 million users, is the largest community on the network and already specializes in automatic text-to-image generation using AI.
In addition, the firm shared its views on establishing an AI-focused incubator for allocating funds to developers who wish to create AI for their chat app. Discord hopes that its updated bot, Clyde, will achieve the same level of popularity as Microsoft’s new Bing AI and its rival Slack. Now will it be able to garner the same fanfare, only time will tell.
