YouTube CEO Confirms It’s Exploring NFTs for Content Creators

Susan Wojcicki, the CEO of YouTube is exploring integrating functionality for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for content creators, per an annual letter to the creators.

YouTube CEO Bullish on NFTs

YouTube, the world’s largest website for video content could be the next tech behemoth to embrace NFTs as in her annual letter to creators, the company’s CEO Wojcicki noted that the firm is actively exploring NFTs.

In her letter, Wojcicki said:

“The past year in the world of crypto, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and even decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) has highlighted a previously unimaginable opportunity to grow the connection between creators and their fans.”

Adding:

“We’re always focused on expanding the YouTube ecosystem to help creators capitalize on emerging technologies, including things like NFTs, while continuing to strengthen and enhance the experiences creators and fans have on YouTube.”

YouTube’s decision to explore NFTs doesn’t come as a surprise as last year, micro-video app TikTok partnered with blockchain-based audio streaming platform Audius to let the latter’s users export their Audius tracks to TikTok.

Can NFTs Continue their Run in 2022

2021 witnessed the explosive entry of NFTs into the mainstream culture.

Popular NFT collections such as CryptoPunks, BAYC, and others managed to stir the pop culture pot and, as a result, we saw several high-profile celebrities endorse NFTs on social media.

Some of the most notable celebrities to publicly embrace NFTs are Snoop Dogg, Mark Cuban, Serena Williams, Jason Derulo, and others.

Most recently, the micro-blogging website Twitter introduced new features that allow users with verified NFTs on the Ethereum network to display their Twitter profile pictures in the shape of a hexagon.

However, the move by Twitter failed to draw any appreciation from the CEO of Tesla Elon Musk who bashed the website’s latest NFT feature.

In similar news, we reported on January 20 how both Facebook and Instagram are considering integrating NFTs into their platform.

The NFT craze is not merely limited to companies as was highlighted recently by the South Korean Ministry of Science that unveiled its ambitious plans to make South Korea a metaverse superpower by the year 2026.

It remains to be seen whether other nations follow South Korea’s footsteps into the metaverse-based future.
