The Terra Classic community is voting on a proposal to reduce users’ network costs. The codebase currently deploys forked versions, which increases total maintenance costs and missed upstream improvements. The Terra community lauded the move, with a majority signaling acceptance amid setting sights on market gains.

Orbit Labs Proposes Vote

A new proposal from OrbitLabs seeks to tweak the network by removing forked mainline modules. According to the release, this will reduce cost and debt, improve sustainability, and enhance security. While the present model increases costs, this proposal will integrate standard upstream modules and port Terra Classic changes to the Terrad module.

“By diverging from the mainline Cosmos SDK and related modules, Terra Classic risks falling behind in adopting key enhancements and new features developed by the broader Cosmos community. This can limit Terra Classic’s competitiveness and make it more difficult to integrate future technologies, upgrades, performance improvements, and other innovations.”

The proposed solution will be concluded in two phases. The first phase will include the Unfork of CometBFT to the main line version alongside an update of CosmosSDK. Subsequently, the migration compatible with the CometBFT will be engaged. Before phase two, the stake logic and oracle would be moved to Terrad while ensuring the network’s oracle functionality is intact.

Phase two involves migrating Wasmd to its mainline, migrating the smart contract store, and performing other tests. A snapshot test will mark the final step of the whole procedure to ascertain rollback procedures.

At press time, 99% of voters had supported the move, as users anticipated lower fees. The team will also give periodic updates on the implementation process. This year, the network has passed several community votes and updates and is looking to gain traction in the coming months. The budget for this upgrade will total $36,000; the first phase will cost $16,000, while phase two will cost $20,000.

On social media spaces, LUNC holders have tipped the update to occasion the need for the platform’s on-chain development.

Improved maintainability and reduced technical debt

Easier adoption of future CosmosSDK updates Improved security through faster implementation of upstream fixes Improved interoperability with other Cosmos-based chains Potential to attract more Cosmos developers to the Terra Classic ecosystem,” the proposal reads.
