Introduction to the Distorted Reality of Crypto Scam

The Boston Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) remarks about the evolution of scam taking place in the crypto economy as per the rapidly changing technology. The number of individuals facing such fraud issues are on a consistent rise and as a result of which is soaring financial losses. 

Investigators reported a sort of trend in which the scamsters use remote desktop softwares to execute the crypto scam. Their primary goal is to manipulate victims into disclosing personal data or transferring priceless digital assets, for example, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to the offender’s account. 

They act like tech support representatives from a popular tech organization. They may contact the victims via call, message, or an email to seek the confidence of solving their current issues of computer viruses or software license renewal, etc.

Then as part of their scam, victims are often aimed to transfer their funds out of brokerage or bank accounts to crypto exchange, or a secondary option as transferring their contents of crypto wallets to another wallet in order to “protect” the contents. Finally, the scammers now will direct them towards their phishing and original looking copied websites, then fulfill in stealing the login information and thus completely handover control of their crypto accounts to the sinister. 

The malicious actors also convince customers to install free, remote desktop softwares on their systems to allow them to control, operate and fully act in the system of victims. They finally anyhow achieve their wicked objectives. 

Need For Strong Shield

Chainlink, a blockchain analysis company, represented the fact that hackers wiped out approx 1.3 Billion USD worth of crypto assets in a short span of two months, that is from January to March,2022.

Also, according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), which facilitates the users to report Internet related crimes, has stated of the soaring losses incurred by victims in various types of Tech support scams which also accounts for the emergence of crypto as well. 

On 19 October,2022, from its official account on Twitter, the FBI warned users- “If you receive an email attachment from an unknown sender, verify their identity offline before opening it. Opening malicious attachments can cause you to download a virus or logging software, and potentially lead to more phishing emails”. 

Some ways to safeguard from the crypto scam are as follows:

  • Avoid reacting quickly. As scammers want you to act fast according to their wish. 
  • Avoid providing any unknown, unverified person to access your devices remotely.
  • Avoid downloading or clicking any anonymous website or link.
