Solana is preparing to implement the long-awaited Alpenglow upgrade, which will bring the network one step closer to the most significant protocol rewrite to date.

The governance process results released on Tuesday show that 98.27% of SOL stakers voted yes to approve the new consensus protocol for Solana, with only 1.05% voting against and 0.36% abstaining.

Solana Targets 150-Millisecond Transaction Finality

Once implemented, the Alpenglow upgrade would cut the transaction finality from over 12 seconds to just 150 milliseconds, delivering a hundred-fold speed increase and setting a new benchmark for decentralized infrastructure.

“At these speeds, Solana could realize Web2-level responsiveness with L1 finality, unlocking new use cases that require both speed and cryptographic certainty,” wrote the Solana Foundation in an Aug. 21 blog post, adding: “The compounding effect of these initiatives and the many others in the Solana ecosystem is financial infrastructure that operates at internet speed.”

Alpenglow’s new components, Votor and Rotor, will replace Solana’s existing systems, TowerBFT and Proof-of-History. Votor is anticipated to dramatically reduce transaction finality times, while Rotor will replace the proof-of-history timestamping system and slash the time required for data transfers between validators.

Currently, Proof-of-History timestamps transactions to preserve their order without slowing the network, while TowerBFT handles the voting process among validators. Alpenglow’s enhancements will reconfigure both systems.

Now approved by the network’s validators, Solana expects Alpenglow’s implementation, a technological improvement expected to unlock speadier transaction confirmations, resilience, and scalability across its ecosystem.

As ZyCrypto reported, Solana recently achieved over 100,000 transactions per second in a test run by a Solana developer.

Alpenglow boosts Solana’s competitiveness against rivals like Ethereum, potentially propelling SOL to new all-time highs in 2025, if institutional adoption and decentralized finance growth accelerate.

SOL Chart Pattern Hints At $1,000

Meanwhile, Solana’s chart now suggests that the $1,000 SOL price milestone is still in the cards.

“Solana’s weekly chart shows a multi-months base followed by a multi-months sideways,” crypto analyst Gally Sama opined in a Sept.2 X post, adding:

“This setup usually leads to strong moves. Target remains $1000 for $SOL once we breakout of this range.”

SOL is up about 2.4% in the last 24 hours to around $210.19, still 28.3% off its February all-time high of $293.31, CoinGecko data shows.
