Poseidon DAO: the encounter with the metaverses

Poseidon DAO, this past Monday on 16 January, featured 3 established Web3 realities in its regular Twitter Space. There were various points discussed together, starting from the interoperability of NFTs in the industry, a need felt by all, to the impact that the Meta company (formerly Facebook) has had in the industry.

OverTheReality

Over is a Web3 platform which was established in 2018 in order to create a Metaverse linked to the real world, which is modified and adapted through augmented reality experiences.

To do this, they make use of a 3-layer structure: the first, also called the “ownership layer,” divides the virtual world into hexagons that cover the entire surface of the earth and are purchasable as NFTs, the second is called the “mapping layer” and allows geolocation in an extremely precise way even inside buildings while the third is the “builder layer” that allows NFTs to be loaded or even built inside the metaverse via code.

Metagate

Metagate is a very recent company; it has not developed its own metaverse but aims to study various platforms and connect metaverses with companies that want to enter the market.

As its founder said, Metagate belongs to the second generation of companies operating in Web 3.0, and it operates precisely by creating a bridge between companies in the “traditional” sector and the metaverse, managing to offer each entity the metaverse best suited to its needs and developing on their behalf across the different platforms.

The Nemesis

The Nemesis is a 3D metaverse in which it is possible to interact through digital avatars and aims to integrate real life with digital life. For example, by purchasing a pair of real shoes from a partner company and scanning a QR code, you would also have the same shoes in Web3, on the feet of your avatar.

The Nemesis is a metaverse focused on the mass market approach, and this entails that decentralization is not total as the mass market is not yet ready to use blockchain on a daily basis. The aim is to act as a bridge between Web2 and Web3, as there is no need to have a wallet to use the platform but one can play by just connecting a social profile; obviously using a wallet provides more possibilities for interaction.

Differences and collaboration

Over and The Nemesis also discussed the differences between their metaverse projects: Over is more focused in the physical world while The Nemesis is more focused in the gaming world. However, both emphasized the importance of cross-platform collaboration, which is much more common and widespread in Web3 than it has ever been in Web2.

Interoperability and NFTs

The discussion then focused on the need, felt by all three platforms, to try to achieve complete interoperability. Indeed, Over and The Nemesis said that if there is no interoperability, then Web3 differs little from Web2.

All platforms should contribute in creating a standard that allows the same NFTs to be used in different metaverse projects. Metagate, in contact with companies outside the blockchain world, also shares this point: if an outside company is going to invest in NFT marketing, being able to have maximum interoperability allows them to take less risk and thus invest with fewer concerns.

Future implementations

They then talked about what Web3 platforms should do to improve their perception in the eyes of the general public, especially given that the market to target is still vast when taking into account that the users of all Web3 platforms are just 0.5% of those of Roblox.

The Nemesis focuses on anti-fraud merchandising and on connecting the use of the platform with real life in a 360-degree way by focusing, for example, on “improve my body, improve my avatar,” which allows users to get a better performing avatar if they exercise in real life.

Moreover, thanks to new technologies it will be possible to achieve a totally immersive experience, allowing not only to play games but also to chat or make video calls within the same platform at the same time.

According to Over, there should instead be a greater focus on exploiting the physical locations transposed to Web3 and accompanying them with avatars that are able to guide the user inside monuments or cities, explaining and telling the story of the different places. A further step would be to make 3D reconstructions in real time by simply framing a monument with a cell phone.

Perception of Meta

All 3 players agreed that Meta has contributed a great deal in popularizing the new interactive and immersive Internet, but Meta is still a purely Web2 space while the metaverse is Web3. Finally, the discussion dwelt on the importance of educating users about the concept of ownership of NFTs populating the metaverse and trying not to create dystopias.
