Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has teamed up with 3D software firm Masterpiece Studio to roll out Masterpiece X – Generate, an artificial intelligence (AI) tool designed to create 3D models via text inputs.
The generative AI offering lowers the entry barrier for traditional 3D, allowing users to generate 3D models without additional hardware. According to the official announcement, users of the text-to-3D tool will not be required to download any software or learn new skills to dabble in 3D modeling. According to the announcement:
“All you need is a keyboard, a browser, a little imagination, and just a few words!”
Masterpiece Studio says its generative model “empowers” creators by skipping the complex parts of 3D modeling through several key strategies. Apart from removing the requirement of hardware and skills, the project uses an intuitive website to streamline the process.
Users can jump into the process by making a few selections on the kind of model to be created, colors, and the desired animation for the creation. Furthermore, users can explore new ideas using the AI co-pilot and prototype several versions while interacting with assets compatible with Blender and Unity.
Despite the layers of functionality, Masterpiece X – Generate has its flaws with users pointing out that its interpretation of text inputs requires fine-tuning. The service also falls short in creating “high fidelity, AAA game assets,” with creators facing limitations over precise controls over the final details of their creations.
“But for creators who’ve never created – or for creators who just want to quickly create some assets to test or evolve concepts – generating 3D assets is like having a superpower that unlocks completely new creative possibilities!” read the statement.
One area where the project shines is its large trove of assets in its library, free for use without copyright infringement. The generative AI product was designed by merging Masterpiece’s proprietary process and Nvidia’s Picasso to push the frontiers of the creative process.
In recent months, Nvidia’s hardware has played a central role in several generative AI projects, increasing the company’s valuation beyond the levels reached during the rush for GPUs to mine digital currencies.
Walking the regulatory rope
Amid Nvidia’s relevance in the sector, experts have pointed to gathering dark clouds on the horizon for the chip manufacturer in several jurisdictions. In the U.S., the company has been precluded from selling its advanced AI chips to China over national security concerns, a trend that could affect the company’s earnings in the long term.
Moreover, the European authorities are investigating Nvidia for allegedly breaching antitrust laws in GPU and AI sectors. The investigations culminated in a dawn raid on Nvidia’s Paris offices by French authorities in early October.
