The relationship between football and blockchain has attained a new height after Real Madrid, and Barcelona football clubs filed for a co-owned Metaverse trademark. The development manifested after popular trademark lawyer Mike Kondoudis revealed the move via his Twitter page. The lawyer revealed that the application for the Metaverse by the two Spanish clubs is for international classes 9 and 41.
According to Kondoudis, the two clubs aim to allow fans to explore numerous club-related products in the Metaverse. With the Class 9 trademark, the clubs will initiate an electronic wallet and applications for managing crypto-related transactions using the blockchain. Class 41, on the other hand, will cater for the clubs’ virtual reality games, interactive entertainment, and other virtual reality-related experiences.
This isn’t the first attempt of FC Barcelona into crypto-related projects. Recall that around June 2020, FC Barcelona, in partnership with Socios.com, floated its fan token ($BAR) on the Chiliz platform. The Chiliz platform is a prominent blockchain-oriented outlet for sports and entertainment bodies. Last year, through a collaboration with Ownix, an NFT marketplace, the club launched an NFT collection of some iconic moments.
The club’s president, Joan Laporta, described the collection as a privilege for fans to access a part of the club’s legacy. However, the deal failed to live up to expectations after charges of Sexual assault and forgery were raised against Moshe Hogeg, an executive of Ownix. Barcelona was forced to work out of the deal due to these allegations against the club. As part of its exploration of the crypto space, early this year, the club almost signed a shirt sponsorship deal with Polkadot.
Meanwhile, the joint filing for a Metaverse Trademark by FC Barcelona and Real Madrid is surprising. The two clubs are major rivals both domestically and in European competition. This rivalry isn’t limited to sporting activities alone, as the two clubs represent different political movements. FC Barcelona is a major face of the Catatonia region in Spain. On the other side, Madrid reflects the values of Spain’s royal family.
Catalonia has been pushing for secession from Spain for a long time. FC Barcelona is in the middle of the separatist movement, and the club has overtly offered a strong voice for the region’s secession. Consequently, at a time, the club attracted a fine from UEFA for showing solidarity with the region during a Champions League match.
Lastly, the two teams will be looking to kickstart their La Liga campaign strongly this weekend. For Madrid, the club will aim to build on its success last season after clinching domestic and the UEFA Champions League title. At the same time, FC Barcelona will seek to banish the memories of the departure of its legend, Lionel Messi. The club ended trophyless last season, which heavily reflects the impact of Lionel Messi.
