A survey report recently published by Coda Labs shows that Web 3 gaming is yet to go far in terms of adoption as interest and knowledge about the latest form of gaming is still relatively low.
The survey, which was conducted in June 2022 by WALR, a data creation platform, saw responses from 6,921 people in five different countries namely Brazil, Japan, the United States, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.
81% of these participants were gamers, (those who regularly play video games but only use crypto once in a while), 16% were crypto gamers (those who regularly play video games and use cryptocurrencies and NFTs) and the remaining 3% were crypto non-gamers (those who regularly use cryptocurrencies and buy NFTs but rarely play games).
Low Interest in Web 3 Games
According to the report, gamers do not really know Web 3 games. In fact, 52% of them are not familiar with any of the common Web 3 gaming-related terms. Only a few have heard of the term, “play-to-earn (P2E)”, and had at one point played a Web 3 game.
Among those who have never played a Web 3 game, 85% of them were indifferent towards it as only 15% said they are interested in playing a Web 3 game.
The report also noted that only 12% of regular gamers among the respondents said they’ve played Web 3 games. Interestingly, the major reason why they played the games is because of the crypto reward that comes with them. According to the report, the majority of the audience said that they did so for the sole purpose of earning crypto.
Others familiar with Web 3, however, cited other benefits that come with Web 3 gaming such as connecting with friends in the Web 3 community, gaining access to new games, ownership, and interoperability.
Web 3 Gaming Challenges
When asked why they think Web 3 games are recording low interest from people, gamers said that lack of knowledge as to how the technology works as well as lack of blockchain wallets are two of the reasons.
Crypto non-gamers and crypto gamers also shared their own views, noting that Web 3 games are expensive to get involved with, and even if the funds are available, concerns about being scammed still arise.
