IonQ Inc filed a prospectus supplement with the SEC on November 10, 2025. The filing covers the resale of more than 2 million shares of common stock by The University of Chicago.
The prospectus filing stems from a registration rights agreement. IonQ entered into this agreement on November 7, 2025.
IonQ, Inc., IONQ
The company also announced a partnership with the University of Chicago. This agreement establishes the IonQ Center for Engineering and Science on the university campus.
IonQ will deliver a dedicated next-generation quantum computer to the campus. The company will also install an entanglement distribution quantum network there.
This deployment represents a first for IonQ. The company has never before placed production-grade quantum computers and quantum networks at a university location.
The partnership gives University of Chicago researchers access to IonQ’s quantum hardware and software tools. Researchers across multiple disciplines will be able to use these resources.
Research and Development Focus
The collaboration includes ongoing support for research with the university’s quantum faculty. The research aims to generate intellectual property for IonQ’s use.
IonQ plans to use this intellectual property to develop new products and capabilities. The company expects the partnership to support long-term commercial growth.
Research areas include quantum hardware for computing, networking, sensing, and security. Applications will span chemistry, materials science, optimization, security, and communication protocols.
IonQ Chairman and CEO Niccolo de Masi described the agreement as foundational. He stated the partnership will fuel IonQ’s innovation engine.
De Masi explained the company is combining commercial-grade quantum computers with academic talent. The goal is to generate innovations with real-world applications.
Campus Infrastructure Plans
IonQ will contribute to construction of a new building on campus. The facility will be called the IonQ Center for Engineering and Science.
The building will house the University’s Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering. It will also accommodate other university science and technology research areas.
IonQ is positioned to become a core partner of the Chicago Quantum Exchange. The CQE is a multi-institutional research consortium based at the University of Chicago.
The consortium includes Argonne and Fermilab national laboratories. Other members include the University of Illinois, Northwestern, and Purdue.
University of Chicago President Paul Alivisatos said the partnership reflects the university’s conviction. He stated foundational discovery and industry can advance the field together.
IonQ has existing academic partnerships. The company maintains a Quantum Research Center at the University of Maryland.
IonQ also works with Duke University on multi-qubit gate design and quantum algorithms. The company collaborates with the University of Washington on matter-antimatter imbalance simulations.
The prospectus filing on November 10, 2025 allows The University of Chicago to resell its shares under the registration rights agreement signed three days earlier.
