The individual behind 2023’s $195 million Euler Finance hack appreciated the Penpie hacker for steadfastly funneling funds via Tornado Cash and showing no indication of returning the proceeds.
A hacker whose efforts led to the recent $27 million Penpie protocol attack received a compliment from another hacker in the spotlight last year for exploiting Euler Finance. The Penpie hacker hit the protocol on September 3, making away with their illicit proceeds.
They funneled about $7 million of the stolen funds through Tornado Cash within 12 hours to cover their tracks. Further reporting from blockchain security firm PeckShield indicated the address moving over $23 million to Tornado Cash on September 6.
The Euler Finance hacker chimed in as the situation unfolded, leaving an on-chain message for the Penpie hacker, which PeckShield updated through its coverage of this hack. “#EulerFinance Exploiter sends 1 msg to the #PenpiexyzExploiter,” it said. The on-chain message read, “Good job bro. I didn’t see a hack like this for a while. I’m happy you kept all the money and didn’t let these bastards get back one dollar of what you took. You won, they lost. Good job.”

The Euler Finance Hacker Was Cornered to Return 90% of Their Exploits
The appreciation stems from the Penpie hacker walking away with the $27 million and not showing any hesitation in doing so or indicating wanting to return the proceeds. On the other hand, the Euler Finance hacker returned most of their exploits. In 2023, they targeted DeFi protocol Euler Finance with a flash loan attack to extract $195 million.
However, Euler launched a campaign to reward anyone coming forward with the hacker’s details that could lead to an arrest with $1 million. Simultaneously, they announced that the hacker could keep $20 million and not face legal trouble if they returned 90% of the stolen funds. They decided to do so. Euler stopped the $1 million campaign to get the hacker’s details.
